Audi R8 Suspension Leak Causes and Fix

Seeing fluid around your R8 shocks?

A wet or oily residue around one or more shock absorbers is the most common sign of magnetic ride failure on the Audi R8. Left unaddressed, the fluid level drops, damping response degrades, and you may start seeing suspension warning lights on the dash.

What is actually leaking.

The fluid leaking is magnetorheological fluid, a specialized oil containing iron particles suspended in solution. It is what gives the shock its variable damping ability. When seals fail, this fluid escapes and the system loses the ability to adapt to road conditions.

The fix.

The only correct fix is to replace the seals and refill the shock with fresh magnetorheological fluid. Nagengast does this as part of their full remanufacturing process, which also covers any other wear found during teardown. The end result is a shock that functions and feels like new.
